UAE -as a dynamic and forward looking country-has a lot to offer to UN Security Council
Ambassador Lana Nusseibeh of the UAE speaks at the UN Security Council. She has affirmed that the UAE — as a dynamic and forward-looking country — believes that it has a lot to offer to the UN Security Council and to the entire multilateral system.
The UAE is hoping to be selected to serve on the UN Security Council for two years starting next year.
“We believe that the UAE has a lot to contribute to the Security Council and to the multilateral system as a whole. We are a dynamic and forward-looking country in our region, a bridge builder, a humanitarian leader, and a global hub of commerce, trade, and innovation.”
The Emirates would use its seat at the world’s top table to push for women’s rights, fight climate change and terrorism, and reduce tension in the region, including building bridges with Iran.
“UAE foreign policy has very much prioritised de-escalation, political diplomacy with Iran and with other regional contexts in the last few years, and I think you’re going to see an acceleration of that foreign policy trajectory in the coming period,” Ms Nusseibeh said.
“As a member of the Security Council, our actions will reflect the UAE’s foreign policy priorities, advance our strategic vision for a stable and secure region, and strengthen our partnerships with countries worldwide. This will only be the second time in the UAE’s history that we hold one of the ten elected Council seats. The last time we were on the Council was more than thirty years ago, so this truly is a once-in-a-generation opportunity.”
